Safety Chains
Trailer safety chains are a mandatory connection between a towing vehicle and a trailer, designed to retain the connection in the event of a coupling failure. They must comply with specific Australian standards (ADRs) based on the trailer’s Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).
Australian Regulations and Requirements
Trailers up to 2500 kg ATM: Must have at least one safety chain that complies with Australian Standard AS 4177.4.
Trailers over 2500 kg and up to 3500 kg ATM: Must have two safety chains that comply with Australian Standard AS 4177.4.
Trailers over 3500 kg ATM: Must have two safety chains made from steel with a minimum 800 MPa breaking stress, conforming to the mechanical properties of Grade T chain as specified in Australian Standard AS 2321.
Each chain’s minimum breaking load must exceed the trailer’s ATM.
